A walk through playful ideas

Una ruta per les idees lúdiques

All the reactions in knowing the idea of the game have been positive and surprised in equal parts but… would you know how many games have been created about the referendum? Don’t miss this little review. You may be surprised…

Rewinding…

It is often said that the political issue does not fit very well in the gaming community, accustomed to zombie attacks or space expeditions… The reality, however, is not as accurate as it seems… In November 2017, after the idea of the Op. Referendum landed, homework had to be done and questions answered such as…

  • Is there a game made on 1-O?
  • Is there a game about the Catalan referendum?
  • It’s more… is there a game about a referendum?
  • If there are any… where is it? What’s its name? How do it play?

It was mandatory to survey for similar games. It was decided to rule out games about elections (there are many more games than you think!) because it has important differences from a referendum. So let’s start and, from today, we look back in time to show all that we found then and up to now. Let us begin!

1-O el joc, of enpeudejoc editions

The most recent attempt of all is that made during the past 2019 by an editorial born for the occasion, coming out of nowhere to verkami on October 1, the same date scheduled to launch Op. Referendum. The sensation of seeing a project so similar, both in content and form, is a little strange. Later, seen more closely, it can be seen that the only thing similar between the two projects is the subject matter.

1-O the game is, in the words of the creator himself, a war game for initiation where two sides confront each other to break into or protect the polling stations in Catalonia. Defending democracy or legality, the game aims to commemorate the events of October 1st from historical neutrality.

But let’s go look for more…

El joc de taula 1-Oct

This proposal seems to be available on the web. It must therefore be deduced that it has already been published, although we have not been able to see whether it is through microfinance or by means of a wallet. The initiative belongs to what seems to be a publishing company with this unique game in stock (plus some T-shirts). Interestingly, the approach also happens on the same day of the vote, but the action zooms in on a particular school, being able to change the scenario between several schools to choose from.

Moving on, this is just the beginning…

Las tractoradas

According to Vilaweb in this article, it is a small unpublished work, in video game format, about October 1st, where the tractors take the lead to make it possible. Although the video game is an attempt, it is surprising to see how this comes out from a place as far away as the United States…

Let’s continue…

Som i serem, nou estat en joc

During that same October 2017, according to the authors, a game of family stature and carefree art was being created to make what would seem to be the winner of the initial idea title. The proposal mixes the well-known mechanics of questions and answers in a sort of “Monopoly of the process” (due to the arrangement of the boxes) where a ballot box is set up where you can vote and achieve independence.

The game makes a wink at Catalanism with originality, offering donkeys for the players’ chips and St. George or the Dragon cards. We have not been able to find out any current information about the project which, as It said, was successful and sought to continue more editions, but now it seems abandoned.

Come on, there’s more!

El joc de l’O1 and Referèndum: el joc

Also during 2017, before the “Tractor Trailers”, a couple of simple applications with ephemeral paths came out (now inaccessible from the App Store) of which we could only find the web reference of one of them and the demonstration video of the other. Nothing more…

And the list goes on…

Call of voty (I i II)

Perhaps it was the parody that the Polish team (TV3) made of the famous war game “Call of Duty” that encouraged them to make this other video game. In this case, however, it was much earlier, in view of the celebration of 9N (the prelude to 1O).

The video game can be downloaded for free from the App Store and the theme, once again, focuses on the day of the vote, where you have the mission of “bringing breakfast” to the polls without being caught by the police. A simple and enjoyable game to spend some time dodging police…

We’re not done! Let’s keep rewinding…

La consulta en joc

We scratched a little harder over time until we reached the proposal born to, as they said, “understand what is happening between Catalonia and Spain”. The game became a reality between the contributions of a verkami and those of the authors themselves in 2013. If you take a look at the link, don’t miss the 4 possible endings that the game allows.

It won’t be long now…

Le jeu du référendum, Mega Express: Spelet om EU and Det nya Europa

With Quebec’s referendum on its independence and Sweden’s on the European Union, three games came out about a referendum (Le jeu, Mega Express and Det nya). Unlike the first of October, the players fight electorally for victory. It was released between 1994 and 1995, when few games were popular around here apart from Risk, Monopoly or any of the so-called “party games” boom.

Now, finally, let’s go for the one that looks like a winner…

Referendum, un gioco per cambiare

Hold on tight to make a temporary trip to 1985 and a geographical one to Italy. A playful antique more interesting than you think because… surprisingly, the proposal is quite similar to October 1st. In the game there is no consultation in itself, the challenge is to achieve it by fighting and adding support from different social groups. Bravo…

Someday, perhaps, we will explain how the idea of the Referendum Operation 😉 At the moment this is the picture. Are there any more to be mentioned? Will new games come out? Surely, because the 1st October created a totally new dystopian theme.

The creators of the games made until then could not even imagine a scenario like that. Not a State taking “democracy” as a game, using the police as pawns and treating citizens as chips. This they could imagine perfectly… What they could never have imagined is the reaction of the people and the victory we lived that October 1st. Becausa, once again… reality overcame fiction.
